Training

William and Mark were training hard these last few weeks in preparation for the Olympic triathlon taking place on Sunday 4 July in Athlone .  That’s right, you read it correctly, no need to adjust your screens- an Olympic triathlon!  A grueling mile long swim in the river Shannon, followed by a quick dash to the bike to complete a 40km cycle loop of Athlone town followed by (if still alive!) a 10km run through the town to the sound of cheers and encouragement from the adoring public!  If you’re in the area, come along and show your support- a great day out!  The Rockies will be nothing to these 2 boys!!

Fundraising Update

Don’t forget for anyone that is living in the Maynooth area you have the opportunity to impress everyone with your physical greatness by competing in a sponsored 5 mile run in Glen Royal gym on Friday 9 July .  Simply collect your sponsorship card from reception and sign up to do the run at a time that suits you!

Catherine McGrath and James Chew  of the social club in Citigroup were absolute godsends  when it came to the organisation and running of the quiz held by Citigroup in The Vault, last Thursday (24 June) .  The quiz was highly attended and there was a hard fought battle for first place prize of an extra day off work!  The quiz raised   hundreds and the total amount is ever increasing,   which includes  the auctioning of another day off work on the night raising €106 .

Grafton Street Collection – Day Three

Mark gives a brief panoramic synopsis of both the cycle and the day. Filmed 26 June at the top of Grafton Street in Dublin.

McSavage Comedy Night

Comedian extraordinaire Dave McSavage provided a night of great entertainment and quick witted humour in the Twisted Pepper on Abbey Street last night ( Thursday 17 June 2010 ).  If you missed Dave McSavage and what another opportunity to see him, then head along to Wicklow Town’s brand new comedy club in the Grand Hotel on June 25 th .  Bringing with him comedians Sharon and Jonathan, both of whom are performing in the Street Performing World Championship this weekend in Merrion Street this weekend ( 19 and 20 June 2010 ), we were provided with a great night of international comedy.  Be sure to head down to the Street Performing World Championship to catch these acts and many, many more.  All events are free and you can vote for your favourite act!

We’re still in the process of counting the funds raised last night and will provide an update as soon as we can.  A big thank you to everyone who came along and also to the Twisted Pepper for providing a fantastic venue.

Don’t forget there are still loads of ways to support the Irish Cancer Society and the Livestrong foundation with our upcoming events, our next event is the Citigroup Table quiz (unfortunatly only open to citigroup employees) on Thursday 24 th June on in the Vault, with an incredible first place prize of an extra day off work!  For all those brain-boxes out there, don’t fret, we haven’t left ye out- we’ll be hosting a table quiz in Leixlip on Friday 25 th June 2010 where you can give your brain matter a good workout!

Those based in Wicklow, we have it on good authority that we will be featured in the Wicklow People this coming Wednesday 23 rd June so be sure to go out and get a copy!  Also don’t forget we have the best band in the county- Feedback – headlining a gig in the Leitrim Lounge on Friday 10 th July , fantastic music and great atmosphere so don’t miss it!!

Pats on backs all round

On Saturday, 2 thirds of the Cycle of America 2010 cyclists competed in the TriAthy Sprint triathlon in half-decent times. Wicklowman Kerwin beat Dubliner Leonard by a 3 minute margin. The disappointed Leonard refused to give Sky Sports the interview they wanted but assured that Kerwin will be beaten in the upcoming Tri Athlone Olympic event in July

Fair play to the lads.

Mark’s Aunt Marguerite, his mother Mary and William’s friend Denise Boland completed the Mini Marathon on 6th June in similar conditions and in the process raised a hefty sum in the process for the Irish Cancer Society. The final sum will be announced upon lodgement to the Irish Cancer Society.

In further news the lads will be pedalling away fundraising on their bikes for 3 saturdays in July and 2 Saturdays in August on Grafton Street so if you see the lads show your support whether it be encouragement or ay show of support it will be highly appreciated

How you can help – Donating blood platelets

The Cycle of America Team would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone who has donated money and time to helping our cause.  We have made lots of money for our charities and we hope this will continue with more fundraising events both here and in the USA .

We want to remind people as well that they can contribute in many ways to help in the fight against cancer.  While our aim for this cycle is to help raise as much money as we can for patient care, there are many other ways in which ordinary people like ourselves and you can help out.

  • Platelets are small cells in your blood that allows your blood to clot properly.  Platelets are used to save the life of seriously ill patients, mostly cancer patients.  The procedure is simple, only takes an hour and doesn’t hurt- your blood is passed through a special machine that removes the platelets and then returned to you while the collected platelets are passed on to those who need it.  You can get straight back to your normal life and activities after given platelets.  An hour from your day may save someone’s life.  Please consider giving platelets if eligible.  Please log onto the Irish Blood Transfusion Board website for more details and to see if you qualify to donate: http://www.giveblood.ie/Become_a_Donor/Give_Platelets/Give_Platelets.html .  For those who do not meet qualifying criteria we urge you to consider giving blood on a regular basis if possible instead.
  • Volunteering your time and skills is a very rewarding way to spend your spare few hours.  Instead of lounging around on the sofa or walking around shopping centres put a few of those hours you have spare to good use.  Volunteer your time by working at one of the ICS charity shops or become a volunteer at one of the ICS’s walk in Daffodil Services.

Mark’s Exam

We want to wish Mark the very best of luck with his exam tomorrow (Wed 26/05/2010)- we know how hard he’s been working and considering the mammoth amount of work he’s been putting into the organisation of the cycle it can’t have been easy.  We’ll have our fingers crossed for you!

Fundraising on Grafton Street

We have applied to the Gardai for permission to set up street collections on Henry Street and Grafton Street for June and July and are in the final stage before we get approval- so it’s looking good.

We plan to start our collection on June 19 th and from then every Saturday in June and July .  To help us out, even if just for an hour or so, get in touch with one of the lads, email us or leave a message on Facebook.  Again, any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Northside People, Wicklow People

Also, keep an eye out in the Wicklow People: William is giving another interview this week and it should be appearing in the paper soon.
